'the Somme' tour
The trip to the Somme is a perfect continuation for participants who have already visited the 'Ypres Salient', but can also be done as a separate tour.
It is unbelievable how time stood still here, as we walk the battlefields from 1916. We still find almost unchanged landscapes, panoramas and crater fields...
The Somme was the place where the saddest chapter in British military history took place.
On July 1st, 1916, thousands of British soldiers went 'over the top' here, with a strong belief in their 'big push'...
But poor preparation and a strong underestimation of the German defenses caused 20,000 British fatalities ... on the first day, in the first hours alone...
The offensive was then continued until November, with no breakthrough or significant gains in the field.
It is hard to imagine that this scenario was repeated around Ypres, one year later in 1917...
We visit the most important places and visible remains in the landscape: craters, scarred fields, important memorials and cemeteries.
As in our Ypres-tour, a lot of personal stories are discussed here. Your visit to the Somme will definitely leave a lasting impression ...
If you tell us in advance your personal interests for a certain battalion, regiment, place or family member in the great war... we will be happy to offer you a well documented bespoke tour.
